Photo(s) of the Day 6-9-2015: Afternoon under the highway

With my brain fried from end-of-month reconnaissance at work last Friday, I treated myself to an afternoon stroll up Dorchester Avenue. En route to pick up detergent, I discovered Boston’s soon-to-be-tallest residential tower had finally become visible from south of the city.

This picture isn't great, but that stack of concrete with the crane poking out in teh distance is going to be a gorgeous 700-foot sheet of glass in a few years.

I have a tendency to refer to many of the new large buildings sprouting up in town as “beasts” or “monsters,” but this future monolith fits neither designation. With more than a few nods to the Hancock Building, this new towering shard — Millennium Tower — is going to break the current height plateau in Downtown and bring the city’s two skylines (the other being Back Bay) more in line with each other height-wise. It’s part of a new generation of tall luxury complexes coming to town, including the under construction Four Seasons Tower and, hopefully, a funky glass thang over at Copley Place. I’ll talk more about these down the line when hopefully I can snap some U/C pics.

My trip was cut short by some wildly unexpected sunshowers, but I still got a few solid shots of the new developments along the way.

After waiting out the rain beneath I93, I ventured toward Dewey Square and took a few snaps of what I think I have confirmed is my favorite diva in Dewey Square, One Financial Center.

This is the most unassumingly handsome tower in town. Yes, it looks like it needs a diet when viewed heading north on 93 South, but it offers up endless interesting perspectives when gazed upon from the square. While I’m not a fan of towers that seem to disregard the urban fabric like this one, it does it so much better than the neighboring Federal Reserve building.

Not much of a story after that, but this is another route I highly recommend anyone in the area take if they haven’t for skyline gawking. it’s got some of the most underutilized photo vistas in the city. I’ll have more pictures highlighting some of the other gems along this route shortly, but here are some of the highlights for now.
