I took this picture of the Custom House coming out of a side alley on to State Street after work a couple of weeks ago. It still felt like winter then, not unlike today; which is cruel considering how warm spring break was. I worked almost every day, but they opened up the patio at work and I finally made some good money this week. I think I was heading to my bank when I took this picture to make a deposit before I went home to sit on my ass and do nothing the rest of the night, when I noticed how good downtown looks when it’s kind of gross outside. The sky was gray and it kind of made the granite on the Custom House glow, and from the vantage I was at (sidewalk across from 75 State) the tower seems to sprout from the cornice of the old trade building in the foreground. The Custom House is bad-ass; it shoots upward, embracing its vertical cues, and wears it’s dunce-cap like a crown with a numbered, stained-glass clock-face addressing all corners of the city. It’s dwarfed by it’s neighbors today, and the clocks haven’t been synced up since I’ve been keeping track, but it’s still the most elegant tower downtown, and by far one of the most beautifully detailed, on par with the shorter gems nearby from downtown Boston’s commercial past. I’ll be posting more pictures as break is over and I’ll be downtown in a more active capacity for the remainder of the semester. And hopefully, the pictures will be of Boston in warm weather and blue skies. Stay tuned!
